Lorenzo Cervantes, 98, of Sterling, passed away peacefully on Monday April 18, 2022 at Rock River Hospice & Home.

He was born in Uvalde, TX the son of Jesus and Catalina (Valdez) Cervantes. He was a veteran of WW II having served from Feb 18, 1943 – Nov 2, 1945 in the U.S. Army Special Forces with the Devil Brigade. He was awarded the Silver Maple Leaf by the Canadian Government and a Bronze Star by the US Government. He married Concha Garcia on January 10, 1949 in Sterling. He was employed at Northwestern Steel and Wire Co for 36 years retiring from the conditioning yard. Lorenzo attended St. Mary Catholic Church and was an avid St. Louis Cardinal Fan. For many years he did lawn maintenance and landscaping.

Survivors include his wife, Concha; daughters: Mary Kay Kested (Terry Smith) and Laura (Donald) Conklen; sons: Tony (Sally) Cervantes, Lorenzo (Dana)
Cervantes Jr and David Cervantes; 10 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.

Private burial with military honors will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Sterling, with the Reverend James R. Kennan officiating. There will be no visitation.
